Starting Your Work From Home Business: Is A Home Business Really For You?

Is A Home Business Really For You?

By:  Sandi Moses

Webster defines business as “ the buying and selling of goods.” That could also be expanded to include “services.” It really doesn’t matter whether the business is located in a home, or in a traditional brick and mortar store front. When all the individual uniqueness is stripped away, a business is still “the buying and selling of goods or services.”

When you own the business, you are the seller. You are a successful business owner when you convince others to become your customers and buy whatever it is that you are selling. You are even more successful when you convince them to become repeat customers and buy from you again.

It takes a certain personality type and temperament to be able to sell anything to another person. I have observed three levels of ability and temperament. The lowest level just isn’t cut out for this. Such a person would squirm just reading about it. The thought of trying to talk anyone into buying anything makes these people clam up and unable to get the job done at all. This person should not own a business unless they can hire or partner with someone else to sell the product or service.

The middle level is very good at selling to people who come to them for something, but not good at going out and initiating the sale. For instance, if a customer came into a store looking for a particular item, this middle-type person could not only show the customer what they came for, but also something to go with it, all the while engaging in conversation. The customer leaves happy, the business owner is happy, and the middle-type person has done a great job. But that middle person would clam up just like the lowest level person if they had to go out and make sales calls

The highest level person is able to go out and make calls, selling whatever he or she has to offer. This person is not afraid of rejection. This is the person who should own a home business.

So what can your home business offer? There are party-type businesses selling clothing, home decor items such as candles, toys, educational supplies, jewelry, etc. There are businesses offering character letters to kids, virtual assistant services, medical transcription, bookkeeping, proof reading, wedding planning, candy wrapping, catering, organizing, etc. Or how about yard service, home and/or office cleaning, repair of almost anything, computer techie service, and on and on and on.

What do all of these have in common? The business owner has to not only sell the service or product, but sell themselves as the one the customer wants to choose to provide the service or product.

Easy if you’re cut out for it. Difficult to impossible if you’re not. And so we end where we began: Is A Home Business Really For You? only you can answer that one.

Starting Your Work From Home Business: So You Want To Start A Home Based Business

So You Want To Start A Home Based Business

By: Sandi Moses

People decide to - or need to - work from home for lots of different reasons. Losing a job, a disability incompatible with the “9-5 grind,” or caring for family members are just a few of the reasons. But what to do?

Some people are best suited for being a “home-based employee.” In recent years some U.S. business have given up on “off-shoring” their customer service call centers to the opposite side of the planet, and begun “home-shoring” or hiring people right here in the USA to handle customer service calls from their own homes and computers with very simple and inexpensive software and phone hook-ups. It is a win-win-win situation for the business, the employee and the customer.

Other people would rather start their own business and run it from their home. Before that happens, some very serious self-evaluation is mandatory. If this is you, first you need to make a list of your likes and strengths, and a list of your dislikes and weaknesses.

Let’s start with dislikes and weaknesses, because it’s every bit as important to know what sort of home business to avoid as it is to know what to consider starting. If you are not good with numbers and did poorly in math in school, don’t start a bookkeeping business. If your spelling and grammar are atrocious even with spell check, you should not become a proof-reader, a greeting card writer, or send “letters from Santa.” Are you uncomfortable around kids? Don’t open a day-care center. You get the idea. Make your own list and be brutally honest.

Now for your strong points. Make a list of your skills and things you enjoy doing. Don’t overlook skills that you have always taken for granted but not everyone has. List also any interests you may have that you have acquired a lot of knowledge about over the years.

Are you organized? There are people would will pay you big bucks to help them get organized. Do you have office skills? Be a virtual assistant. Good at finding flea market bargains? Sell them on eBay. There are many types of items sold at home parties, such as candles, personal care products, home cleaning products, cosmetics, etc. Be sure to do your home work before investing money - some of these are not as easy as they would like you to believe. Spend some time on the internet or in the library doing research on any established company before joining forces with them. It will be time well spent. Do not just gloss over this; really dig deep.

You could also provide services to people that need them. Run errands, house-sit or dog-sit, shop, interior decorate, etc. The list is nearly endless because everyone is gifted with a unique set of skills, abilities, ambitions, and needs. The time may be now to put yours to use by starting your own unique home based business.

Starting Your Work From Home Business: The First 7 Steps To Starting A Home Based Business
Posted by admin on (1011 Reads)
by: Ed Rizzo

Imagine the next time you join a discussion about home based business. When you start sharing the fascinating home based business facts below, your friends will be absolutely amazed.

So, you've decided to start a home based business. Congratulations and welcome to the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship. While there is a lot to learn, your effort will be worth it. The thrill of growing your business, the freedom and flexibility to set your own hours, and the possibilities of ever-increasing financial rewards are all wonderful reasons to start your home based business.

Now that you've decided to start your business, you might be wondering "How can I get it off to the strongest possible start?" These seven tips will help:

1) Set up a separate working space in your home. It doesn't matter if this is a small bedroom, one part of the garage, or a corner of the living room. The important thing is to have some space that you can designate as your working area. This will give you the space and room you need to craft your dream.

2) Stock your working space with materials. This sounds basic, perhaps, but one underlying element of success is that you have easy access to the tools, materials, and other resources you need. Gathering everything close by also keeps you from wasting time searching for it, so this step can be considered a time management strategy, too.

3) Speaking of time management, your third step is to define the parameters of your business. What days and hours will you work? When will you market? When will you provide services or products to clients? How will you keep all of this straight?

4) Balance action with planning. one of the most common pitfalls to successful entrepreneurship is getting too caught up in action without enough planning. Stated another way, this means that you confuse "being busy" with "working on important projects." The best approach is to plan your next couple of goals and then work backwards to create step by step action plans to reach them. once you have the plan, then it's time to take the action.

5) Network like crazy. one of the fastest ways to grow any business is to make connections with other people. Be sure to share your passion and enthusiasm with others at every opportunity. Let people know who you are and what you offer. Remember, people can't buy if they don't know you're selling.

6) Present a professional image. If you want to be treated professionally, present a professional image. Set up a separate bank account for your business. Install a separate phone and fax line. Create professional marketing materials. Be courteous and pleasant in all your customer facing interactions. Basically, be someone people want to do business with.

Once you begin to move beyond basic background information, you begin to realize that there's more to home based business than you may have first thought.

7) Automate your business as much as possible. Granted, you are just one person (right now) and might have a lot of extra time to take care of all the details. This might work for now, but won't work into the future as you get busier and busier. It's best to set up automatic systems and processes right from the start to free up your time to concentrate on the most profitable activities.

These seven tips will get your home business started (and growing) in the right direction. There's no doubt that the topic of home based business can be fascinating. If you still have unanswered questions about home based business, you may find what you're looking for in the next article.

Starting Your Work From Home Business: How to Organize Your Life and Business
Posted by admin on (1269 Reads)

By:  Jennifer Schilling

Are you constantly stressed because you can't get organized at home, no matter how hard you try? Do you ever feel as if you are drowning in a sea of stuff? Are you frustrated because you are always running behind?

If so, here are a few steps towards a better organized you whether it's just in your house or for your home based business.

Start with a plan. Don't try to do everything at once, or you'll get overwhelmed and give up before you even start. Junk accumulates in 4 areas: space, time, priorities, and paper/information.

Decide which one of the 4 areas you want to deal with first, and then ask yourself these questions:

1. Why do I need this in my life?
2. Why do I want this in my life?
3. Why is this essential in my life?

As you use the 3 questions above, take baby steps in what will be a life-long progress that will help you be more successful and have less stress and more balance in your life.

Your Space

When you eliminate things you don't need or use, life becomes simpler, with less stress and more balance. You are able to focus on the things that are important to you, and you can get more enjoyment out of your space.

As you go through your home, tackle one room at a time, starting with the area that's most frustrating to you. Get that under control, and then move on to another problem area.

The bathroom is often a good starting place because it's one of the smallest rooms in your home, and de-cluttering it will give you a sense of accomplishment and renewed energy to keep going.

Your Time

Do you want more time to take care of yourself? Are you trying to squeeze more time out of your day to spend with your family? Are you looking to cut down on your chores at home? Time seems to be one area that gets out of balance very quickly.

There are many activities vying for your attention: your home business, socializing, church and school programs, recreation, yard work, reading, exercise, and so much more....And even though they all seem important, you don't have time for all of them. You need to make decisions about how to best spend your time.

To help you manage your time, make sure you have a family calendar with everyone's activities recorded on it: not only will this help you stay organized, but it will show you if you are spending enough time with your loved ones.

Use lists to stay on track: grocery lists, cleaning lists, project lists, etc. Lists help you in two ways: first, by writing down your tasks you are de-cluttering your mind, and second, you can do your chores quickly, knowing exactly what needs to be done.

Remember that time is a precious gift: use it wisely by making choices rather than reacting to situations as they occur.

Your Priorities

Do you find yourself on the run at all times? It's really easy to always be busy and not accomplish things that are most important in your life.

When you know what's important to you and what your goals are, it is easy to say "no" to those activities that don't move you towards those goals. To set priorities, you must first know what you want to achieve: take time right now and think where you want to be in 1 year, 5 years, and even 10 years.

What will you be doing? Where will you be doing it? Why will you be doing it? How will you be doing it? And lastly, with whom will you be doing it?

Once you have a clear picture of where you want to be, you can create a plan to take you there. Write your goals in pencil, and don't be afraid to change them, if your life's circumstances change. Goals are just guidelines for your life.

Your Paper/Information

You need a plan to control all types of information: your photos, children's mementos, bills to be paid, receipts, warranties, income tax information, excel spreadsheets for your business and any other vital documents.

For photographs, have them placed in an album for that year, or for the occasion, immediately after you picked them from the photo shop: otherwise, you'll be wondering later on, where or when you took those pictures.

For your kids treasures, get a box for each child, and when they fill it, they need to throw away one memento before they add their last creation. This is the best way to save only the best of your children's treasures.

For your vital documents, make sure you have them in a safety deposit box.

As for your online business information, organize your desktop and your email with well labeled folders, and make sure you only save information that is absolutely necessary: otherwise, you'll soon be overwhelmed.

There are so many things you can do to de-junk your life and using it for your business too! I hope this is the beginning of a great adventure for you, as you declare war on junk and take control of your life.

Starting Your Work From Home Business: Your online business..Don't overspend your credit cards.
Posted by admin on (1228 Reads)

By Tal Fighel

Credit cards can be a great thing for the new online independent business owners who have just started their online venture. They are convenient, easy to use, and are very useful when it comes to taking those small baby steps that a newbie needs to start online.

Here are 4 basic and very important tools that any new person needs to start with:

1. Website name registration and Web hosting
2. Auto responder
3. Leads
4. Joining an affiliate program

Once everything is set up and completed, the excitement starts to build and they think about doing some advertising and making some money.

A few days pass. They reach for their credit card and start spending money on all those tempting juicy ads that promises them ‘sales soaring through the roof’ results, without having any idea what they are spending on. They have no plan in place. They never thought about setting a budget.

Once they max out 1 credit card, they are tempted to try other marketing things, which brings them to the point of applying for more cards or using their other cards that they posses.

How do I know this? Well, my story began 2 years ago, when I first started my online business venture. I would listen to everyone on how I should promote my current website and the affiliate programs that I was and still am in. I went out and spent lots of money without planning my endeavor.

Solo ads, pay per click, buying leads, membership to this and that. The list goes on.....

To make a long story short, I have maxed out a few credit cards because I was stupid enough to spend money on advertisements without planning my budget. My biggest mistake was that I had no plan in place. I made that mistake, and I am very happy about it because now I can teach you not to make the same heart breaking mistakes.

So, don't spend money that isn't really yours. It is important to spend money that is yours and is within your budget.

You need to plan a monthly budget so that you know what your plan is and you don’t go over it. Remember, if you don’t draw yourself a monthly game plan, you can get tempted to spend on many things which can cause you to go into a hugh and never ending debt.

The problem with overspending your credit card or cards is that once you get behind, it can take so long to catch up. Knowing that you spent lots of money and you got into more debts, this can be very scary, frustrating, and can make you feel like quitting very fast.

Many people set a budget and stick to it. But somehow others don’t because they find it hard to ignore those juicy advertising words that lets them think that it will bring their efforts excellent or any results.

Now, I am not saying that a credit card is bad for you. You MUST know how to use it the smart way. If you use it the wrong way as I described above, it can mean the difference between success and failure.

So here are 4 easy steps that you can use right now so that you do go in the right direction with your online business, and you don’t go into BIG debts.

1. Here is a quote I use on a daily basis. “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. In other words, you should plan what you will be doing and what you are planning to spend each month. If you don’t have a plan, then you can lose a lot of money.

2. Know when to just say ‘NO’. It is tempting and easy to grab a credit card, enter your card number, and click on the “Pay Here” button. I know all about it. So set a monthly budget and stick to it. Period.

3. If your plan of action in advertising does not bring you the results that you were expecting, then revise or change that plan, but stick to your budget.

4. And finally, give your business time to grow and never give up no matter what.
